On June 26th international organizations, universities, scientists, and businesses will gather in Stockholm to create a global green innovation collaboration – a collaboration that will result in a ”Sustainable Valley” where climate-smart innovation is at the center. ”We don’t have time to wait, the solutions are needed now,” says Christer Otterström, initiator and CEO of the recycling company Hummeltorp.
Drastic changes are needed to meet the climate goals. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has reported that global emissions would need to be reduced by 43% by 2030 to achieve the 2050 carbon targets. At the same time, Sweden is on its way to significantly increasing greenhouse gas emissions. New solutions are needed.
With innovation at the heart of the green transition, researchers, organizations, and industry come together under the name ”The Green Innovation Collaborative” to discuss green research and research areas that are particularly undertreated. The initiative includes the recycling company Hummeltorp, Biosphere 2 at the University of Arizona, the Institute for Sustainable Development and the Global eSustainability Initiative (GeSI).
Just over a week ago, the Swedish government gathered parts of the business community to discuss climate solutions at a national climate conference.
– When the country’s leadership and public sector fail to invite researchers, academics, and leading organizations to climate meetings, it lands on other actors to join forces to make a difference. We don’t have time to wait, the solutions are needed now, says Christer Otterström, initiator of Sustainable Valley and CEO of Hummeltorp.
The Green Innovation Collaborative will meet on June 26th at 09:00-17:00 in the World Trade Center in Stockholm. The ultimate goal of the initiative is to create a city – Sustainable Valley – in the Stockholm region that will be the hub for green research and the engine for sustainability development. The initiators of Sustainable Valley are the Swedish recycling company Hummeltorp and the Institute for Sustainable Development in the U.S.
– There is a need for an international meeting point for climate-smart work where innovation is at the center. The hope is that Sustainable Valley will become the hub for research work and the engine for development that supports the transition to a circular and carbon-neutral society, concludes Christer Otterström.
