Sustainability

We help our customers meet their sustainability goals

The UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development are a unifying force that aim to persuade governments, enterprises, and other societal organizations to all pull in the same direction.

Even though we are a small enterprise, we punch above our weight when it comes to developing ways to contribute to efforts to reach these goals. Above all, we can help our customers to meet their sustainability goals.

Goal 5

Goal 5 is to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

Sub goal 5.1: End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls.

Sub goal 5.5: Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making.

We do this by:

  • Recruiting female employees wherever possible in an otherwise male-dominated sector
  • Recruiting female managers wherever possible to ensure equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making

Goal 6

Goal 6 is to ensure access to water and sanitation for all.

Sub goal 6.4: By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity.

We do this by:

  • Launching “Hummeltorp Water Purifying Systems” for research & development of circular treatment technologies for leachate, stormwater, and groundwater
  • Innovative new technology for circular reuse of leachate and stormwater that reduces the use of groundwater
  • New water technology to filter out and recycle nitrogen and phosphorus from leachate and stormwater
  • Development joint ventures for encapsulation of PFAS in the ground to stop further contamination of groundwater

Goal 7

Goal 7 to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy.

Sub goal 7.2: By 2030, substantially increase the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

We do this by:

  • Electric hubs and new transformer stations to increase the orientation to electric power concerning stages 1 & 2 by up to 1,000 Amp
  • Transition to renewable diesel – RME & HVO 100
  • Reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 96% in five years
  • Reduced number of wasted journeys from our customers
  • New technology for the recovery of heat/energy from horse manure for heating offices and workshops
  • New and more efficient transport logistics with 95% backhauls

Goal 9

Goal 9 is to build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and promote innovation.

Sub goal 9.4: By 2030, upgrade the infrastructure and retrofit industries to make them sustainable, with increased resource-use efficiency and greater adoption of clean and environmentally-sound technologies and industrial processes, with all countries taking action in accordance with their respective capabilities.

We do this by:

  • Launching “Hummeltorp Clean Tech” for research & development of environment safety, recycling, composting, hygienization, biochar and biocompost
  • New technology to filter out and recycle nitrogen and phosphorus from leachate
  • Increase the recycling rate to min 96% – a start to changing the entire ballast industry and reduce the use of non-renewable natural resources
  • New hygienization facility – largest horse manure facility in Sweden
  • New technology for the recovery of heat/energy from horse manure for heating offices and workshops

Goal 12

Goal 12 to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Sub goal 12.4: By 2020, achieve the environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycle, in accordance with agreed international frameworks, and significantly reduce their release to air, water, and soil in order to minimize their adverse impacts on human health and the environment.

Sub goal 12.5: By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse.

We do this by:

  • New and more environmentally efficient transport logistics with 95% of backhauls
  • EcoHorse to resolve a societal problem concerning horse manure
  • Recovery rate to a minimum of 96%
  • Develop new products from waste such as concrete, blasted rock, asphalt, rebar, horse manure, excavation spoil, and sulfide-bearing rock
  • Development partnerships with, e.g., Scania for the recovery of metals from molding sand
  • New technology for the recycling of tree stumps and garden waste

Goal 13

Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Sub goal 13.2: Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies, and planning

We do this by:

  • New transport technology and more environmentally efficient transport logistics with 95% backhauls
  • New climate neutral production technology

Goal 14

Goal 14 is to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources

Sub goal 14.1: By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution

We do this by:

  • Launching “Hummeltorp Water Purifying Systems” for research & development of treatment technologies for leachate, stormwater, and groundwater
  • Waterproof ground layer
  • Leachate in closed systems
  • Filtration of leachate and recovering of nitrogen and phosphorus.
  • Restoring wetlands

Goal 15

Goal 15 is to sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss.

Sub goal 15.1: Ensure the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems.

Sub goal 15.5: Take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity, and, by 2020, protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species.

We do this by:

  • Recycling ballast materials and helping to reduce the consumption of non-renewable natural resources such as rock and gravel
  • Since 2018, we have been actively engaged in the SAND MARTIN project, to save this threatened species. We are creating a natural living environment and breeding colony for sand martins that is maintained every year. The number of sand martins and nest sites has increased every year.
